LocalAI: Run AI Models Locally Across Text, Vision, Voice and More
Most local AI setups require choosing a tool for each modality separately. One for text generation, another for image generation, another for voice, another for embeddings. Each with its own config, its own format, its own hardware requirements.
LocalAI runs all of it through one OpenAI-compatible endpoint. LLMs, vision, voice, image generation, video, embeddings, and real-time audio. Every backend wraps a best-in-class engine: llama.cpp for text, whisper.cpp for transcription, stable-diffusion for images, MLX for Apple Silicon. Each backend is a separate image pulled only when a model needs it, so you install nothing you don't use.
What it gives you:
• 60+ backends including llama.cpp, vLLM, whisper.cpp, stable-diffusion, MLX, and more
• Drop-in API compatibility with OpenAI, Anthropic, and ElevenLabs across every backend
• Hardware support for NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, Apple Silicon, Vulkan, and CPU-only
• Built-in agents with tool use, RAG, MCP, and skills via the Agenthub community hub
• Multi-user support with API key auth, user quotas, and role-based access
• WebRTC realtime audio for speech-to-speech pipelines
In-UI fine-tuning and on-the-fly quantization
• Distributed cluster mode with VRAM-aware smart routing and autoscaling

LocalAI: One Local Runtime for LLMs, Vision, Voice, Images and Video
Running AI locally often means choosing different tools for different modalities — one for text, another for speech, another for images, and another for embeddings.
LocalAI brings many of these workloads behind a single local API.
It is an open-source AI runtime that can run models on hardware you control, including CPU-only systems, GPUs, and Apple Silicon. It provides an OpenAI-compatible API and also supports Anthropic and other compatible interfaces.
What it supports:
• 60+ backends covering text generation, speech-to-text, text-to-speech, image/video generation, vision, embeddings, reranking and more
• Backends built around engines such as llama.cpp, vLLM, whisper.cpp, Diffusers and MLX
• CPU-only inference, along with acceleration for NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, Apple Silicon and Vulkan
• Built-in AI agents with tool use and MCP support
• RAG and agent capabilities through its integrated platform
• Multi-user features including API-key authentication and user quotas
• Realtime audio through WebSocket and WebRTC transports
• Model quantization and fine-tuning capabilities
• Distributed inference, including GPU worker nodes, P2P federation and model sharding
One of the interesting parts of LocalAI's architecture is that the runtime is modular: backends can be installed on demand rather than bundling every inference engine into the core.
The important caveat: "no GPU required" doesn't mean every model will run efficiently on a CPU. Large models and generation-heavy workloads can still require significant RAM and compute.
But if you want to experiment with local AI while keeping inference under your own control, LocalAI is worth exploring.
